{"id":273,"date":"2026-05-20T08:02:03","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T08:02:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/waramutse.icu\/?p=273"},"modified":"2026-05-20T08:02:03","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T08:02:03","slug":"rica-students-hope-to-transform-rwandas-agriculture-through-soil-conservation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/waramutse.icu\/?p=273","title":{"rendered":"RICA Students Hope to Transform Rwanda\u2019s Agriculture Through Soil Conservation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Students at Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture say they are determined to help change farming practices in Rwanda by promoting soil conservation and sustainable agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university says Rwanda loses around 27 million tons of topsoil annually due to erosion, resulting in economic losses estimated at Rwf 810 billion every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RICA Development Director Jean Claude Kayisinga said the institution was created to respond to growing concerns over soil degradation and climate-related agricultural challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that the university is working with the Ministry of Agriculture under a four-year agreement to promote conservation agriculture nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students say many farmers still lack awareness about modern soil protection methods, but they believe education and practical demonstrations will gradually change attitudes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOur mission after leaving here is to teach farmers the benefits of agriculture that protects the soil,\u201d said second-year student Christelle Micyomyiza.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>RICA\u2019s campus covers nearly 1,400 hectares, with much of the land dedicated to experimental farming and conservation agriculture projects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students at Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture say they are determined to help change farming practices in Rwanda by promoting soil conservation and sustainable agriculture.
