A recent study on the welfare of journalists has shown that 92.8% believe their salaries provide only limited support for basic needs or fail to cover them entirely.
The survey found that most journalists earn relatively low incomes, with many making below Rwf300,000 per month. Only a small percentage earn more than half a million francs monthly.
Employment insecurity also remains a major concern. Fewer than half of journalists surveyed have long-term employment contracts, while around 20% work as freelancers without stable agreements.
Housing data from the survey indicates that 68.9% of journalists rent their homes, 24.3% own houses, while others live with relatives or friends. Only 0.6% receive accommodation support from employers.
