Leaders in Muhanga District have called on today’s entrepreneurs to avoid following the path of businessmen who used their money to support the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
During a commemoration event for businesspeople killed in the genocide, officials recalled how some wealthy traders financed killings by supplying vehicles and machetes to militias.
Muhanga Mayor Jacqueline Kayitare said many Tutsi had turned to business after being denied educational opportunities, only to later be killed and looted during the genocide.
She praised the current business community for contributing to Rwanda’s development and supporting genocide survivors.
Meanwhile, the district branch of Private Sector Federation announced financial support worth Rwf4 million to help small survivor-owned businesses grow.
