In Muhanga District, Rwanda’s youth are demonstrating the true spirit of volunteerism by building homes for families affected by recent natural disasters. The community project, carried out in Kibangu Sector, marks the official start of Rwanda’s National Month of Volunteerism, which celebrates unity, resilience, and collective action.
Seven houses are being built through community work (Umuganda), now reaching the roofing stage. Muhanga Mayor Kayitare Jacqueline praised the volunteers for their dedication, saying the initiative strengthens community bonds and supports Rwanda’s vision of self-reliance.
“We call on families to teach children the value of hard work. This month reminds us that working together and caring for others is the essence of true resilience,” she said.
The District Youth Volunteers Coordinator, Solange Kamanzi, said the campaign also includes educational outreach, road safety awareness under the Gerayo Amahoro initiative, and school attendance campaigns.
“Rwandan youth today are inspired by the sacrifice of those who built peace and unity. We have no excuse not to contribute to our country’s progress,” Kamanzi added.
Local authorities pledged continued support for vulnerable families, while beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the youth’s compassion and energy.
“Their work gives us hope,” one resident said. “They are proof that Rwanda’s youth are truly the backbone of the nation.”
