Rwandan officials have urged African countries to strengthen unity and self-reliance in tackling security and development challenges facing the continent.
The call was made during an annual conference organized by the Rwanda Defence Force Command and Staff College in partnership with the University of Rwanda.
The discussions centered on two major topics: foreign interference in African affairs and Africa’s opportunities for sustainable development through natural resources.
Rwanda’s Minister of Defence, Juvenal Marizamunda, said the continent’s security challenges demand coordinated action among African states.
He referenced the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, saying the international community failed Rwanda during one of its darkest moments, proving that countries must prioritize protecting themselves.
Marizamunda said Rwanda’s transformation under Paul Kagame demonstrates the importance of leadership, responsibility, and long-term vision.
Foreign Affairs Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe echoed similar views, stating that Africa’s political, economic, and military future should be shaped by Africans.
He encouraged stronger cooperation among African nations to reduce dependence on external actors and prevent conflicts across the continent.
The conference aims to strengthen the analytical and strategic capabilities of senior military officers dealing with emerging security threats in Africa.
