Muhanga, Rwanda – The Mayor of Muhanga District, Kayitare Jacqueline, has emphasized that Umuganura Day is not only a moment to celebrate the harvest and community achievements, but also a time to reflect on how to safeguard resources for the future and intensify efforts toward self-reliance and development.

Speaking during the celebrations, Mayor Kayitare stated that when citizens work hard and attain progress, it enables the local government to focus on larger development priorities in sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, public health, and sanitation. She highlighted that promoting hygiene and cleanliness is essential in preventing diseases and reducing the need for hospital visits.

“Celebrating our achievements is important, but it’s also a reminder not to consume everything at once. We must save for the future and strive to produce even more for continued development,” she said.

She further urged leaders at all levels to champion cleanliness as a daily cultural practice, calling on local officials to take sanitation seriously in order to avoid setbacks caused by poor hygiene.

Citizens Applaud Local Leadership and Commit to Innovation

Several residents took the opportunity to express appreciation for the achievements they’ve made thanks to effective local governance. They pledged to preserve those gains, maintain food security, and continue working towards improved well-being.

Focus on Agriculture: Model Farmers Called to Lead by Example

Gilbert Nshimiyimana, Chairperson of the Muhanga District Council, encouraged model farmers to inspire their neighbors, stressing that community-driven agricultural excellence is key to both local and national development.

He noted that the District’s performance is directly linked to citizen engagement. For instance, Muhanga was awarded a national trophy last year for lifting over 3,000 people out of poverty, thanks to strong collaboration between leaders and residents.

“Umuganura is not just about celebrating crops. It’s about acknowledging progress in healthcare, infrastructure, and technology — and using those achievements to build a better future,” he said.

Community Support: Cows and Food Aid for Vulnerable Families

As part of efforts to uplift vulnerable citizens, five families in Mushishiro Sector received cows, while others were provided with food items. This initiative reinforces the government’s commitment to inclusive development and social support.

Umuganura: A Legacy of Unity and Vision

Umuganura traces back to 1580, when Rwandans would gather to give thanks for the harvest, make plans for the future, and commit to national unity. Today, the tradition continues, integrating modern values such as innovation, self-reliance, and accountable leadership.
