The Rwanda National Police in Nyarugenge District have arrested a 25-year-old woman after finding her in possession of one kilogram and 180 rolls of cannabis.

According to CIP Wellars Gahonzire, the Police Spokesperson for Kigali City, the arrest took place on Monday, August 11, 2025, around 2:00 PM. It followed a tip-off from residents who reported that the woman was involved in selling cannabis.

Police officers searched her home in Mataba Cell, Rushubi Village, where they discovered the drugs hidden in a pile of sand inside the house.

“Upon arrest, she confessed that she had been selling cannabis for some time, noting that her husband—who was also previously arrested for the same offense—is currently in prison,” CIP Gahonzire said.

He stressed that the Rwanda Police, in collaboration with other security agencies and residents, will not relent in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking due to its harmful effects on individuals and society.

“Those who consume drugs are urged to stop, and those selling them should be aware that the tricks they use are already known to authorities,” he added.

Legal Consequences
Article 263 of Rwanda’s Penal Code states that any person who produces, cultivates, processes, transports, stores, supplies, or sells narcotics or psychotropic substances illegally commits a crime.

If convicted for trafficking major narcotics, offenders face life imprisonment and a fine ranging from RWF 20 million to RWF 30 million.
