Karongi District has taken steps to align with Rwanda’s development goals by investing in potato farming. Local farmers have already contributed over 53 million francs to secure high-quality seeds, with the first deliveries made ahead of the 2026A planting season.
The district plans to increase potato acreage from 1,184 hectares in 2025 to 2,139 hectares by 2026. This expansion supports the national target under NST2, which seeks 9.3% annual GDP growth and a 50% rise in agricultural productivity.
Mayor Muzungu Gelard emphasized that potatoes were selected as a priority crop because of their potential to transform the local economy. “Currently, Karongi exports little apart from coffee and charcoal. Potatoes can change this reality and become a major economic driver,” he said.
Alongside potatoes, Karongi is investing in the modernization of banana farms and strengthening tea production in Rugabano, Karongi, and Gisovu, as well as expanding coffee cultivation.
