Authorities in Rwanda have clarified that social media monetization features are not yet officially available in the country, following widespread excitement triggered by a viral screenshot circulating online.
In a public statement, the Ministry of ICT and Innovation said the image contained inaccurate information and urged citizens to rely solely on official government communications. The clarification came after social media users widely shared claims suggesting that monetization had already been activated for Rwandan creators.
The issue recently gained national prominence during the National Umushyikirano Council held on 5–6 February 2026. Popular Rwandan artist Bruce Melodie raised concerns about the difficulties young content creators face in earning income from their online work. He appealed for government intervention to help unlock monetization opportunities.
In response, President Paul Kagame inquired about the requirements necessary for Rwandans to access monetization programs without registering accounts in foreign countries.
ICT Minister Paula Ingabire explained that most social media platforms require three main conditions before enabling monetization in a country. She noted that Rwanda has met most criteria, but still needs stronger advertising investment from local businesses to fulfill the final requirement.
Officials said collaboration between the private sector and digital platforms will be essential to unlock monetization opportunities for local creators.
