Members of Rwanda’s football community gathered on Monday to commemorate victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi who were associated with Kiyovu Sports.
The memorial event brought together players, coaches, club officials, and football leaders, who learned about the history behind the genocide before laying wreaths and observing a moment of silence for more than 250,000 victims buried at the memorial site.
Shema Ngoga Fabrice said the Rwanda Football Federation remains committed to promoting unity and ensuring genocide never happens again.
“Unity is one of the most important values within FERWAFA because it helps us build our country while remembering the tragic history Rwanda went through,” he stated.
Ngoga also shared a personal story, revealing that his uncle, a former Kiyovu Sports official, was killed during the genocide, while his grandfather was reportedly among the club’s founders.
FERWAFA leaders said they plan to continue teaching genocide history within the sports sector and hope to establish a national memorial dedicated to athletes and sports personalities killed during the genocide.
The event concluded with special tributes to former Kiyovu Sports players and supporters who lost their lives in 1994.
