Officials from Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement have assured Parliament that genocide survivors will be included in upcoming national housing programs targeting vulnerable citizens across Rwanda.
The clarification came during a May 12 parliamentary session where MPs examined budget execution reports and raised concerns about thousands of survivors still living in poor housing conditions.
MP Mukampunga Epiphanie revealed that 29,232 survivor households need house renovations, while 6,973 families still require new homes, calling for more equitable distribution of support across districts.
In response, Minister Jean Damascène Bizimana said government institutions including Ministry of Local Government and Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning have agreed to merge housing support programs.
He explained that integrating survivors into broader social housing initiatives will ensure fairness while also strengthening national unity and avoiding segmented assistance programs.
Authorities also emphasized cost-efficiency measures, including use of local contractors and materials, to maximize the reach of available resources.
